Growing incidence of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) in Nigerian Men
Erectile dysfunction (ED) happens when a man has ongoing problems getting and keeping an erection. Without treatment, ED can make sex difficult or impossible. The problem is reported by 1 in 5 men, and that number gets higher with age and now common among many men in Nigeria.
At local aphrodisaic marts that litter busstops and garages in Lagos and major cities in nigeria, Men are enticed to purchase ‘syrups or concoctions that will make them become men again. This aids the growing use of locally-cooked hard drugs, marijuana and tramadol, thus pushing up the red-lights of medical mishap expectation of the country’s human capital, in terms kidney, liver and other opiod-related infirmities.
“The issue with many of us border on psychological trauma and the principal thing “money in the pocket”, says Akinlade a father of 2 and staff in one of the ministries in Lagos state, who said he has lost interest in sex. “I just dey”.

But is ED really, more of a psyclogical issue than medical? Experts say stress, depression, low self-esteem, and performance anxiety can short-circuit the process that leads to an erection. These factors can also make the problem worse if your ED stems from a physical problem.

How to know if you suffer from ED
You may have erectile dysfunction (ED) if
- Your erection is too soft for sex,
- You erection don’t last long enough for sex,
- You may be unable to get it up,
- If you can’t get or keep an erection that lasts long enough or is rigid enough for sex.
There is no secret to ED because as you get older, Sexual dysfunction and ED become more common.

Despite the alarming statistics, Doctors can treat ED no matter the age of the sufferer. Type 2 diabetes, obesity, smoking, and high blood pressure all make suffering from ED more likely. Similarly, any condition that affects the way blood flows through your body could lead to ED.
According to WebMD, ‘ED can be a warning sign of a more serious disease. One study suggests it can predict heart attack, stroke, and even death from cardiovascular disease. If you’re diagnosed with ED, get checked for cardiovascular disease. This doesn’t mean every man with ED will develop heart disease, or that every man with heart disease has ED, but you should be aware of the link.
